Kit Questions
FAQ: Small-kit questions answered
Straight answers to the questions outdoor travellers ask most. For personal skin concerns, a pharmacist, GP or dermatologist is the right person to ask.
Can I take sunscreen in hand luggage?
Usually yes, within the liquids allowance at your departure airport — often 100 ml (3.4 oz) per container in one clear, resealable bag of about one litre, as in the TSA's 3-1-1 rule. Some airports have changed limits with new scanners, so check close to your travel date. See liquids rules.
Is a sunscreen stick enough on its own?
Sticks are tidy for the nose, ears and lips. For larger areas, a lotion makes it easier to apply the amount stated on the label, so most travellers pair the two.
How much sunscreen should I pack?
The NHS suggests around two teaspoons for head, arms and neck, and around two tablespoons for the whole body in a swimming costume. Multiply by your daily applications and reapplications as directed on the label — it adds up quickly.
Should I decant sunscreen into travel bottles?
We suggest keeping sunscreen in its original packaging so the directions, batch and expiry information stay with it. Cleansers and moisturisers decant well into clean, labelled bottles.
What if my sunscreen gets hot on the beach or boat?
Many labels advise protecting the product from excessive heat and direct sun. Keep it in shade, a cool bag or a dry locker. Replace sunscreen that has separated, changed smell or passed its expiry date.
Can one moisturiser do both face and body?
Many travellers use one lotion for both to save space. Whether that is comfortable depends on your skin and the conditions; see textures compared.
How do I wash my face when camping?
Use a bowl, washcloth and a small amount of cleanser at least 60 metres (200 ft) from lakes and streams, following Leave No Trace principles, and scatter used water widely. See low-water routines.
Do you label sunscreens "reef safe"?
No. The term is not standardised. Some places regulate ingredients — Hawaii's Act 104 restricts sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate — so check local rules for your destination.
Do you recommend specific brands?
No. We compare formats and practical trade-offs, accept no payment from brands and are not affiliated with any manufacturer or retailer.
